Record-breaking heat grips southeastern Canada

from CCTV video

TORONTO, Canada (CCTV) — A large part of southeastern Canada is in the throes of overheat as the mercury climbed to a forecast high of 32 degrees Celsius over the weekend.

Capital Ottawa, the largest city Toronto and a great lot of southern Ontario, as well as Montreal in Quebec are on the list subjected to the weather disturbance.

Humidity levels reached close to 40 degrees Celsius.

In the country’s most populous city of Toronto, many residents were seen playing or resting by the seaside, a rare scene even during the searing summertime.

Statistics from local weather authorities show that Ottawa has had 13 days in a row this month of temperatures soaring above 25 degrees Celsius.

From historical weather records since 1884, such unseasonably high temperatures lasted at most for 10 days out of the 30-day September.

The temperature in Toronto hit 32 degrees Celsius around 13:00 on Sunday, breaking the record of 30.6 degrees Celsius in 1959.

In Montreal, some 20 runners of a half-marathon event were sent to hospital due to the sweltering heat.

Environment Canada issued a heat alert on Friday, warning of greater risks of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke or exhaustion for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

The heat wave is expected to continue until Wednesday.
