“Quiel” intensifies into a severe tropical storm

(Eagle News) — “Quiel” has intensified into a severe tropical storm.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said as of 10 a.m., the center of “Quiel” was estimated 360 kilometers west northwest of Coron, Palawan, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph.

“Quiel,” which is moving slowly in an eastward direction, may intensify into a typhoon in 24 hours.

Between today and tomorrow morning, PAGASA said light to moderate with occasional heavy rains will be experienced over Cagayan including Babuyan Islands and Apayao.

Light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains will affect Kalinga, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Zambales, Bataan, Palawan, Mindoro Provinces, Antique, Iloilo and Guimaras.

Sea travel is risky, especially for small sea vessels, over the northern and western seaboards of Luzon due to rough sea conditions, PAGASA said.
