Protests in Manila during ASEAN meet to be confined to Plaza Miranda, Liwasang Bonifacio

(Eagle News) — Protests in Manila that will be held during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit will be confined to Plaza Miranda and Liwasang Bonifacio.

In a statement, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said no demonstrations are allowed near the venues of the 31st Asean Summit and Related Meetings, and near the hotels where foreign dignitaries, delegates and heads of state are billeted, including the Manila Hotel, Manila Diamond Hotel, New World Manila Bay, Pan Pacific and Century Park Sheraton.

Manila Police District director Chief Supt. Joel Coronel said in general, hotels are “definitely off-limits” to the protesters, who are mostly members of the different militant groups, including the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan.

According to Coronel,  the United States Embassy and Roxas Boulevard are also off-limits.

“We will prevent and prohibit them from entering these areas,” Coronel said, noting that a lockdown would be implemented in the perimeters of the summit venues and the hotels that will host the delegates.

Around 60,000 uniformed men will be deployed to secure the Asean Summit.

Coronel said there was information the protest rallies would be held in time for the arrival of US President Donald Trump.
