President Duterte vetoes Security of Tenure bill

(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte has vetoed the Security of Tenure bill.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the confirmation to reporters on Friday, July 26.

“Our goal, however, has always been to target the abuse while leaving businesses free to engage in those practices beneficial to both management and the workforce,” Duterte said in his veto message.

According to Duterte,  “legitimate job contracting” should be allowed “provided that the contractor is “well capitalized, has sufficient investments, and affords its employees all the benefits.”

He said labor-only contracting must be prohibited.

The President has vowed to end contractualization, but his economic managers have emphasized there was a need to strike a balance between the interests of businesses and workers. With a report from Meanne  Corvera
