PNP: 579 convicts freed on account of GCTA law have so far surrendered as of today, the deadline

(Eagle News)–Over 500 convicts released under the Good Conduct Time Allowance law have so far surrendered to authorities, the Philippine National Police said.

The PNP said the 579 convicts were as of 6 a.m. today, Sept. 19, the day the deadline for surrender imposed by President Rodrigo Duterte was set to lapse.

Of the 579, the PNP said 162 were murder convicts, 160 were convicted of rape, 60  of homicide, 56 of robbery with homicide, 26  of drug-related cases, 21 of murder and frustrated murder, and the rest of other crimes.

The Bureau of Corrections has said 1914  convicts were released under the GCTA law, which reduces the sentence of inmates for good conduct.

A joint Department of Justice and Department of the Interior and Local Government panel has revised the implementing rules and regulations of the law which explicitly excluded convicts of heinous crimes from availing of the benefits of the law.
