PHL takes early lead in SEA Games with 23 gold medals; PHL dancesport athletes dominate with 10 golds

(Eagle News) – The Philippines took the lead on Day 1 of the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) with 23 golds, 12 silvers and nine bronze medals for a total medal haul of 44.

It was a rousing start for the host country which is facing the threat of a typhoon (Kammuri) affecting the games’ venues this week.

Dancesport dominated the Philippines gold medal haul, winning the top spot in 10 events. This is followed by arnis where Filipino athletes got five gold medals, and sepak takraw and triathlon where Team Philippines got two gold medals each.

9. sepak takraw – women’s hoop event
10. sepak takraw – men’s hoop event
11. men’s arnis – featherweight full combat livestick, Niño Mark Talledo

The SEA Games website, however, reflected only 22 golds for Philippines.

Vietnam followed the Philippines in the medal tally with 10 golds, 13 silvers, and 9 bronze medals.

Next is Thailand with five golds, four silvers and 10 bronze medals.

Malaysia closely follows with four golds, two silvers and two bronze medals.

Next is Singapore with three golds, three silvers and five bronze medals; Indonesia with one gold, four silvers and five bronze medals; Cambodia with three silvers and six bronze medals; Myanmar with two silvers and eight bronze medals; Brunei Darussalam with two silvers and one bronze medal; and Laos with two bronze medals.
