PHL gov’t to still protect OFWs in Kuwait citing int’l humanitarian law; to assign new envoy

(Eagle News) — Palace has allayed fears of other Filipino workers amid the decision of the Kuwaiti government to expel Philippine envoy Ambassador Renato Pedro Villa who was declared “persona non grata,” saying overseas Filipino Workers in Kuwait are still protected by the International Humanitarian Law.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Philippine government will still able to protect the distressed Filipino workers with the help of the International Humanitarian Law.

The Kuwaiti government said that the Philippine embassy staff committed undiplomatic acts after they rescued some distressed OFWs in the Gulf State.

Roque assured that despite the decision of the Kuwaiti government to expel the Philippine envoy based in Kuwait, the Philippine government will still protect OFWs there.

He said President Rodrigo Duterte will immediately assign a new ambassador who will assist and help the Filipino workers based in Kuwait.

Based on the record of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), there are 200,050 Overseas Filipino Workers in Kuwait. At least 10,000 of them are said to be overstaying and undocumented.
