(Eagle News) — The country’s employment rate in June was reported at 95.5%.
Based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, this is lower than the 97.7% employment rate reported the month before, but higher than the 94% reported also in June in 2022.
The PSA said the 95.5% employment rate in June 2023 translates to 48.84 million people employed.
This is as compared to the 46.59 million people reported employed in June 2022 and the 48.26 million employed last month.
The PSA said by broad industry group, the services sector continued to have the highest number of employed persons with a share of 58.2 percent.
The agriculture and industry sectors accounted for 23.8 percent and 18.0 percent of the total employed, respectively.
According to the PSA, the year-on-year change in the number of employed persons in June 2023 also showed the following increases in employed persons in these top five sub-sectors:
a. Accommodation and food service activities (612,000);
b. Agriculture and forestry (457,000);
c. Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (358,000);
d. Other service activities (268,000); and
e. Public administration and defense; compulsory social security (219,000).
On the other hand, the following sub-sectors had the highest drop in the number of employed persons from June 2022 to June 2023:
a. Fishing and aquaculture (-233,000);
b. Manufacturing (-99,000);
c. Professional, scientific and technical activities (-65,000);
d. Mining and quarrying (-62,000); and
e. Information and communication (-45,000).
Wage and salary workers continued to account for the largest share of employed persons, at 61.5 percent.
They were followed by self-employed persons without any paid employee at 27.1 percent and unpaid family workers at 9.5 percent.
Employers in their own family-operated farm or business had the lowest share, at 1.9 percent.
