Palace throws support behind Briones amid COA findings vs DepEd

(Eagle News)–The Palace on Monday, Aug. 12, threw its support behind Education Secretary Leonor Briones after the Commission on Audit noted errors in some textbooks for public schools.

“As far as I know, the Secretary of Education is a very competent, intelligent educator and she is someone who will never allow any irregularity or any anomaly inside her department,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.

The COA said in its  2018 audit report that filled with errors were learning materials for Grade 3 students worth P254 million.

It also noted that  3.4 million textbooks for public schools were just stocked in five DepEd warehouses, and that the DepEd  accumulated P13.9 billion worth of expenses with no proper documentation, among others.

In a statement, the Department of Education said it was already working with its internal and regional units to comply with the audit recommendations.

“The Department continues to advance its reforms to financial management through the establishment of a Financial Management Reforms Committee chaired by the Secretary herself,” the DepEd said.
