Palace thanks former Senate President Nene Pimentel for contributions to nation-building

(Eagle News)–The Palace on Sunday, Oct. 20, thanked former Senate President Nene Pimentel for his contributions to nation-building, as it expressed its condolences to his bereaved kin.

“He would forever be etched in our history as a giant among his peers who championed democracy and electoral reform and a visionary who espoused devolution of powers and strong local governance,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.

Panelo noted Pimentel’s  enactment of the Local Government Code of 1991, which he said empowered  local governments.

He said the government also thanked him  for helping to draft the federal charter as a member of the presidential Consultative Committee tasked to propose amendments to the 1987 Constitution.

“The Palace joins the Filipino people in mourning the demise of former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. and expressing condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues and friends,”  Panelo said.

Pimentel died at 85 years old after battling lymphoma and pneumonia.
