(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte wants to “intensify” maritime security and cooperation with Indonesia to fight terrorism.
Duterte made the statement during a courtesy call made by Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on Wednesday.
Duterte was accompanied by representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Education, while Retno was accompanied by Consul General for the Indonesian Embassy in Davao Berlian Napitupulu, Indonesian Embassy in Manila charge d’affaires Budi Dhewajani, among others.
“While declaring that the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Marawi are in full swing, President Duterte said that he wants to (do this) as foreign and local terrorists continue to enter and exit the country despite the military efforts to go after these elements,” a Palace statement made public on Thursday said.
According to the President, he also wants to reopen Philippine Indonesia-routes to further promote trade.
In the field of education, he said he wants to grant scholarships to Muslim students, especially those who are studying in Madrasas.
Retno, for her part, said she was keen on a joint education program between the Philippines and her country, the statement said.
She added Indonesia wanted to provide passports to around 300 Indonesian descents who are based in Mindanao.
