(Eagle News) –The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Friday, June 8, officially declared the start of the rainy season in the country.

The announcement came as tropical depression “Domeng” intensified into a tropical storm.

“Due to the prevalent occurrence of thunderstorms and the dominance of the southwest monsoon or ‘Habagat’, the rainy season officially begins today, [Friday]” weather specialist Cris Perez said in a press conference.

The weather bureau said the onset of the rainy season means that continuous rains will be more frequent in the country.

However, PAGASA said that the rain events will be followed by dry periods, or monsoon breaks, for up to two weeks.

The bureau said it will continue to monitor the situation.

“The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the impacts of the rainy season,” it said.
