Ombudsman orders former Iloilo Mayor Mabilog’s dismissal anew

(Eagle News) — Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales has ordered the dismissal of former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog again.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ombudsman said Mabilog’s dismissal stems from his role in the allegedly anomalous agreement between the local government and a private company he himself owned in 2015.

“It is undisputed that respondent entered into a MOA, on behalf of the city government with 3L for the implementation of the city’s clamping ordinance without compliance with any procurement process required under the relevant law for the selection of 3L,” the Ombudsman said.

The anti-graft body found Mabilog guilty of serious dishonesty, conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service, and of grave misconduct.

He was ordered to pay a fine equivalent to his one year’s salary as mayor, and was barred perpetually from holding public office.

His retirement benefits were also deemed forfeited.

The Iloilo City council approved a resolution on February 17, 2015 allowing Mabilog to enter into a memorandum of agreement with 3L Towing Services.

It was then-Councilor Plaridel Nava II, Mabilog’s co-accused in the case, who said Mabilog himself owned the towing company, and asked him to look for a dummy owner.

According to the Ombudsman, Mabilog gave his P500,000 share of 3L’s capital to Nava on June 16, 2014.

Mabilog–who was named as a narcopolitician by President Rodrigo Duterte—was first dismissed in October last year.

This was after the Ombudsman said he failed to explain his wealth worth P8.9 million from 2012 to 2013.
