North Koreans welcome national team returning from U-20 Women’s World Cup

NORTH Koreans on Tuesday (December 6) welcomed their national women’s soccer team who returned to the country after beating France in the U-20 Women’s World Cup final in Papua New Guinea.

Footage filmed by North Korea’s state media KCNA, which could not be verified by Reuters, showed families and other athletes greeting the team at Pyongyang International Airport.

The video also showed Pyongyang residents lining up the streets, waving and cheering as a bus covered with flowers drove past carrying the team.

The final match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 took place at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday (December 3) at 7:30pm (0930GMT).

Grace Geyoro put France ahead early on, but North Korea equalised on the half-hour mark and then scored at either end of the second period to seal their first title in 10 years, according to FIFA.com (Reuters)
