LONDON, England (Reuters) — A colourful piece of street art paying tribute to the late singer George Michael has appeared on a wall in Shoreditch, London.
Passers by took pictures of the image on Thursday (December 29) which shows three different coloured versions of the singer with an earring and jacket, reminiscent of his ‘Faith’ days.
The painting was reportedly done in the early hours of Wednesday morning by Pegasus, an anonymous North London street artist.
According to British paper the Evening Standard, Pegasus wanted to pay tribute to the music legend because of the inspiration he had provided over the years.
It proved a hit with fans, Gemma Day, who was visiting the capital from her home in Sevenoaks, said that after seeing an image of the art online she wanted to go and see it with her own eyes:
”We had a little wander round trying to find it and then we just stumbled across it, it’s impressive and it’s a nice memorial to him as well.”
Local worker David Carty explained he walked past on Wednesday morning as the piece was still being done. He made a point of coming back to see the finished work and was full of praise at what he saw:
”Brilliant, I love it – it’s clear and everybody can see exactly who it is (looks at image) it’s not hard to recognise that’s George Michael. It’s bang on. Colourful – as like he was.”
His sentiments were echoed by Colette Welby, who also thought the image very fitting:
”Yes it is a tribute to him and it’s nice to see it there, I think that sort of represents him quite well really just, I suppose on the outside of things very often, sort of key in terms of his talent – but very much on the outside and depicted like that does represent him well.”
Singer George Michael passed away over the Christmas period, he was aged 53.
