Miss Peregrine set to roost at top of box office

Quirky and individualistic director Tim Burton returns to his normal in “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which is expected to take in 28.0 million dollars for the weekend ending October 1, according to boxofficemojo.com.

The film is based on author Ransom Riggs’ book of the same name and tells the story of a young boy who learns about himself through the peculiar children at a home where it’s normal to be strange and different.

Real life disaster drama “Deepwater Horizon” focuses on the hours before and after a BP rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, leading to the worst offshore oil disaster in U.S. history. Eleven workers were killed and millions of barrels of oil spewed onto the shorelines of several states for nearly three months. The movie, directed by Peter Berg, and starring Mark Wahlberg, looks to pump out 22 million during its initial box office weekend.

“Queen of Katwe,” about a young female chess champion in Uganda, is directed by Mira Nair and stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo. It is on course to reap 4.0 million dollars in a limited release of 1,300 theaters.

Last week’s box office winner, the remake of classic 1960 Western “The Magnificent Seven,” starring Denzel Washington, will add 17.0 million dollars to the 43.8 it made in its first week.

Comedy “Masterminds,” starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig is scheming to take in 6.3 million. Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” about the miracle plane landing on the Hudson River starring Tom Hanks, will safely land a cool 8.5 million in its third weekend in release.
