Militant lawmakers: “Railroading” of impeach complaint vs CJ Sereno, a “clear manifestation of Duterte admin’s bullying”

(Eagle News) — Two militant lawmakers have alleged the “railroading” of the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno was a “clear manifestation of the Duterte administration’s political arm-twisting and bullying of those who oppose him.”

ACT Teachers party-list Reps. Antonio Tinio and France Castro also claimed the House of Representatives–whose justice committee ruled there were sufficient grounds in the complaint filed by lawyer Larry Gadon— was “acting as a rubber stamp in the hands of President Duterte..”

They alleged the President was using the Lower House of Congress “to do the demolition jobs.”

“…The leadership (of the House) intends to hasten the proceedings as a marching order of President Duterte,” they claimed.

On Thursday, the justice panel, with a vote of 25-2, approved the motion of Misamis Occidental Rep. Henry Oaminal that ruled there was sufficiency of grounds in the complaint that accuses Sereno of betrayal of public trust and violation of the Constitution, among others.

The allegations were in connection with, among others, her alleged purchase of a Land Cruiser with public funds, and her alleged failure to declare the “exorbitant fees” she received as a lawyer in her Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
