Malacañang denies Drilon’s claims; says there are no efforts to abolish the Senate

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) – There is no basis for the statement of Senator Francis Drilon that  there are efforts to abolish Senate.

This is according to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, who said that  this was not even mentioned in a recent meeting of the ruling party, PDP-Laban.

Roque also reiterated that the President has no plans of extending his term beyond 2022.

Earlier, Drilon, the Senate minority leader, said that the recent attacks made by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez against the Senate were a prelude to the abolition of the Upper Chamber in the shift to federalism.

“This attack on the Senate is part of the deliberate attempt to weaken the Senate as an institution of democracy. The Senate is part of the check and balance system within the legislature; in the same manner that the Senate may not agree with the House, the House may not agree with the Senate,” Drilon said.
