(Eagle News) — The Social Weather Stations (SWS) reported that Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) members topped its survey on Filipinos who have the highest attendance in religious services weekly, beating other Filipinos who belong to other religions.

Among Filipinos, it is also the INC who believe that “religion is very important” in their lives, the SWS further said.
The survey was conducted among adult Filipinos from March 25 to 28 this year.

“The proportion of those who attend religious services weekly was highest among members of Iglesia Ni Cristo at 90%, followed by Muslims at 81%, other Christians at 71%, and Catholics at 41% ,” the SWS said.

The survey also revealed that the proportion of those who attend religious services monthly was highest among Catholics at 39%” and those attending occasionally, at 20 percent.

When it comes to those who view religion as very important, the INC members also topped the survey.

“The proportion of those who say religion is very/rather important was highest among members of Iglesia Ni Cristo at 96%, followed by
Catholics and other Christians (both at 85%), and Muslims (71%),” the SWS said.

“Highly significant” decline in Catholic service attendance since 1991, also noted

Meanwhile, the SWS poll revealed the consistently low attendance to religious services of Catholics from their previously conducted surveys from 1991 to 2017, or in the past 26 years.

“In the 74 SWS surveys on church attendance from 1991 to 2017, weekly attendance to religious services has always been lower among Catholics, compared to adult Filipinos in general,” the SWS noted.

“Likewise, the latest 41% weekly church attendance of Catholics in March 2017 is just 2 points above the record-low 39% weekly church attendance of Catholics in 2014 and 2015,” it said.

It also noted a “highly significant” 23-point decline in Catholics’ weekly church attendance in the past 26 years of their polls.

“The 23-point decline in Catholics’ weekly church attendance from 1991 to 2017 is highly significant, statistically speaking,” it said.
