House panel approves proposal to postpone May 14 barangay elections

Under proposal, barangay polls to be held on Oct. 8 instead

(Eagle News) — The House of Representatives suffrage and electoral reforms committee has approved the proposal to defer the May 14 barangay elections to October 8.

The committee led by  CIBAC Rep. Sherwin Tugna voted 14-2 to approve the deferment, and voted 17-0 to approve the new date.

Tugna admitted, however, that the Senate would have to approve a similar proposal for the elections not to push through in May.

“The Senate can do it if they really are going to do it, because there’s still five session days left,” Tugna said.

If approved by both chambers of Congress, it would be the third time the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections are postponed.

The elections were scheduled on Oct. 31, 2016, but these were deferred and slated to be held instead on Oct. 23, 2017.

The conduct of the polls scheduled on Oct. 23, 2017 was also moved to May 14, 2018.
