House of Representatives considers declaring Philippine Rise a protected area

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — The House of Representatives has formed a technical working group that will study the possibility of declaring the Philippine Rise as a protected area.

Muntinlupa Representative Ruffy Biazon, who filed House Bill 6036 which proposes the creation of the Philippine Rise Natural Park, said that there was a very urgent need to enact a law that will protect the Philippine Rise as it was still in a pristine condition.

“Its reefs have dodged fishing pressure and pollution because these are so far offshore. It is virtually untouched and undisturbed by human presence,” he said.
