Healthy snacks for school

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News Service, June 17) – The school days are back and one of the major dilemmas faced by moms is to ensure that their kids have a “baon” that is not just delicious but healthy as well.

Preparing your kids’ baon is one of the most iconic rituals attributed to mothers – a familiar sight every morning. It shows how much our moms love us as she sends us tasty and nutritious snacks.

You may be tempted to just give your kids packed biscuits and doypack juices but there’s nothing like a prepared snack to ensure that your kids get the nutrition they need throughout the day.

Here are four easy-to-prepare snack suggestions for your kids.

1. Spaghetti. I mean, what kid does not want sphagetti? Pasta is a source of carbohydrates so that your kid has enough energy for the day while the tomato sauce is guaranteed to be very nutritious. The lycopene on cooked tomato sauce is a highly effective antioxidant. For a healthier variant, you can chop up vegetables like carrots into very itsy bitsy pieces so that your kid does not notice them.

2. Chicken wrap. Many moms face this dilemma. Their kid only wants to eat chicken! But don’t despair, you can use this opportunity to make your kid eat healthy chicken wrap. Just use boiled chicken shreds, add vegetables, then wrap it all up in a tortilla wrapper. This baon will give your kid enough protein as well as vitamins and minerals.

3. Tuna. Every mom knows how to make a tuna sandwich. Open a can of tuna, add mayonnaise, salt and pepper and vegetables and you’re all set. You can also add a twist by making a roll-up. Remove the crust of the sandwich and flatten it with a rolling pin before adding your tuna filling. Roll up the sandwich in flour and then dip it into a scrambled egg wash before frying it. Make sure its golden brown. Tuna is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Enough said.

4. Peanut butter. This is the quickest snack that you can make. And before you have any second thoughts, many experts have already said that peanut butter is very nutritious. Choose a peanut butter that is low in sugar, spread it in whole wheat bread and you’re done. To add a healthy twist, you can add sliced bananas in your peanut butter sandwich. Peanut butter is a good energy source and full of heart-healthy unsaturated fats.
