(Eagle News)–For Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, the restoration of subversion as a criminal offense is not necessary.
In a brief statement, Guevarra said in his opinion, “amending and giving more teeth to the human security act will suffice…”
“There are many provisions that need to be amended. One of them imposes a penalty of P500,000 per day of incarceration upon any law enforcement officer who mistakenly accused and prosecuted a person for terrorism, even if done in good faith,” Guevarra said.
“With all due respect to (Interior Secretary Eduardo) Año, mere membership in the (Communist Party of the Philippines) (subversion) is not a crime unless overt criminal acts are committed,” he added.
Earlier, Año said it was “unfortunate” that the Anti-Subversion Act had been repealed.
He said leftist organizations that are supposedly recruiting students “should be banned for being subversive and illegal.”
