Former senator, Cebu gov. Rene Espina dies; Palace condoles with Espina’s kin

(Eagle News)–The Palace on Sunday, Sept. 15, condoled with the kin of former Senator and Cebu Governor Rene Espina, who recently passed away.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo recalled it was Espina who was   credited for having crafted the country’s first anti-drug law, Republic Act No. 6425, or the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1972.

Panelo said this was the precursor of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Panelo noted Espina also served as   Public Works secretary and Transportation and Communication secretary during the Marcos administration, and was  administrator of the Social Security System at the age of 33.

Panelo noted he was the youngest to hold such a post.

“The Filipino people are indeed grateful for the long track record of public service Senator Espina gave to the nation,” Panelo said.
