Five mayors with alleged drug links stripped of control over police

(Eagle News) — The National Police Commission has stripped five mayors of their supervision and control over the Philippine National Police in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

In an Oct. 30 order, Catalino Cuy, officer in charge of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, said the removal of the powers of Teresa, Rizal Mayor Raul Palino; Lemery, Batangas Mayor Eulalio Alilio; Rodriguez, Rizal Mayor Cecilio Hernandez; Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili;  and San Pablo Mayor Loreto Amante was done after they “have been identified as engaged in illegal drug trade/activity.”

He said this was after “continuous validation by the intelligence agencies concerned.”

“Based on the  consistent pronouncements made by our chief executive President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in his campaign against illegal drugs, the involvement of a local chief executive in illegal drug activity constitutes an act inimical to national security,” Cuy said.
