The woman who died in the “misencounter” in Mandaluyong on December 28 could have tested positive for gunpowder nitrate because she was shot at close range.

This is according to the Eastern Police District, which released results on the autopsy of Jonalyn Ambaan on Thursday.

“Tattooing in her left cheek is possible, so there was nitrate found near her hands..,”Supt.Isidro Carino, EPD Crime Lab chief, said.

Both Ambaan and Jomar Hayawon, the other fatality in the incident, sustained multiple gunshot wounds that led to their deaths, Carino said.

Despite the gruesome deaths of the two, the police ruled out there was criminal intent on the part of the responding policemen to kill them.

Senior Supt. Florendo Quibuyen, head of the Special Investigation Task Group Shaw looking into the incident, said based on their investigation, the 10 policemen–including their team leader Senior Insp. Maria Cristina Vasquez—only acted in the performance of their lawful duty.

As such, he said homicide–and not murder–charges were filed against the policemen who are in custody in connection with the incident.

“We are doing everything we can..We will give you updates para patunayan na walang whitewash,” Chief Supt. Rey Biay, EPD director, said.
