Duterte reiterates call for Robredo to be drug czar; offers her rank of Cabinet

(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte has reiterated his offer for Vice President Leni Robredo to be the country’s drug czar, and even offered her the rank of Cabinet.

In a statement on Thursday, Oct. 31, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the offer includes placing “all offices, bureaus, agencies or government instrumentalities involved in the enforcement of the law on prohibited drugs placed under her command and supervision..”

According to Panelo, the offer was “to dispel all doubts on the sincerity of the Chief Executive’s offer, as well as to put a halt to the discordant pessimism of the opposition..”

“The Palace has heard the various commentaries from the political opposition with regard to the President’s offer to  (Robredo) to head the government’s campaign against the prohibited drug trade, which at once, giving her the golden opportunity to lead the anti-drugs activities of the government for six months,” Panelo said.

Duterte offered to relinquish his powers to enforce the laws for six months to Robredo on Monday, after she said the drug war had failed because it did not curb the number of drug users in the country.

But Robredo appeared to be not interested in the offer.

Her Liberal partymate Kiko Pangilinan for his part challenged Duterte to give the reins to Robredo for three years instead, saying she would do a better job.

Senator Leila de Lima, for her part, called on Duterte to resign instead.
