Duterte orders PNP to strictly enforce the law; says drug addicts, “tambays” shouldn’t be wandering the streets

(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the Philippine National Police to remove drug addicts and “tambay” wandering the country’s streets at night.

The directive came on Wednesday, June 13, during the oath-taking ceremony of the newly promoted personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Malacañang.

During his speech, the President said that the newly promoted officials should ensure that they are strictly enforcing the law and should embody the highest standards of excellence and selfless leadership.

He then ordered the policemen to confront those who are wandering the country’s street, especially in the middle of the night, saying they are potential troublemakers.

“Ang mga kriminal dapat diyan, ang mga durugista, they are not supposed to be there. So my directive is ‘pag mag-istambay-istambay diyan sa [lansangan], umuwi kayo,” Duterte said.

“You be strict. Part of confronting people who do not do nothing and just idling around, they are potential trouble for the public, he added.

The President then said that as part of their job, police authorities should keep lasting peace and progress across the nation that would help build a better foundation for all Filipinos.

“Join me in this quest. I assure you that you have my full support as you contribute to our efforts in advancing the common good and promoting the safety and well-being of our people,” the President said.

“May this momentous occasion strengthens your dedication and commitment to help the government in achieving genuine and lasting peace and progress across the nation. Together, let us build the foundations of a better life for all Filipinos,” he said.
