(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the Presidential Commission on Good Government’s proposal to auction off the P704.8-million Hawaii jewelry collection.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the revelation in an interview with reporters on Thursday, May 30.
Panelo and other Cabinet members are on a working visit to Japan with President Duterte.
“Sabi ni Presidente kagabi na payag na makinabang ang taumbayan doon sa mga jewelry. So tinanong ko siya, ‘Are you going to give the go signal?’ sabi niya, ‘Yes,'” Panelo said.
According to Panelo, what was important to Duterte was that “makarating sa taumbayan ‘yung sales, ‘yung proceeds.”
The Hawaii collection, which was seized from former First Lady Imelda Marcos, is being kept by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
