(Eagle News)–The Department of Justice will order the “immediate” implementation of the suspension order issued by the Ombudsman against 27 Bureau of Corrections officials over the Good Conduct Time Allowance law mess.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said, however, that he would “confer with the OIC and find ways to continue normal operations with the least disruption.”
He was referring to Assistant Secretary Melvin Ramon Buenafe, whom he designated to the BuCor post following the sacking by President Rodrigo Duterte of BuCor chief Nicanor Faeldon over the controversy.
Ombudsman Samuel Martires has ordered the suspension for six months without pay of the BuCor officers after finding them guilty of grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of service.
This was following reports of the kin of inmates paying BuCor officers for the grant of GCTA to the convicts for their early release.
Martires has also asked former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas to explain the implementing rules and regulations of the GCTA law.
