(Eagle News) – Total confirmed coronavirus cases in the country again rose dramatically, climbing to 2,311 after the addition of 227 new cases, the Department of Health said.

The DOH also reported eight additional COVID-19 related deaths on Wednesday, April 1, bringing the total fatalities to 96.

One patient, a 59-year old Filipino male from Taguig City, also recovered. Patient no. 179 had no travel history. He was discharged after two negative test results on March 29. This brings the total recoveries from the virus infection to 50.

The DOH referred only to the 227 new cases as patients 2085 to 2311 (PH2085 to PH2311).

The additional eight deaths reported were all senior citizens, with ages ranging from 65 to 84. Seven of the eight patients who died were from Metro Manila, while one was from Cebu City.

They were listed as having either no travel history outside the country, or has unknown travel history.

The DOH had earlier said that the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases is expected with the widened coronavirus testing in the country, and with the availability of thousands of test kits already approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
