Diokno says Duterte admin plan to increase public school teachers’ pay “not a priority” so far

Public school teachers will experience another hike in pay under EO 21, he assures

(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte’s promise to increase public school teachers’ pay may have to wait.

Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno on Wednesday said that increasing their salaries was “not a priority” as of this time, given the focus on the “Build, Build, Build” program of the government and “social protection.”

“I think we have to study that very carefully,” Diokno said, a day after Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque revealed Duterte’s plan for the teachers.

He said he would talk to the President about the matter.

According to the budget chief, even without the increase, the salaries of public school teachers would still increase under Executive Order No. 21, which said that civilian government personnel would be given four tranches of pay increases until 2019.

He said the third tranche of increase was already implemented this year.
