DILG says Boracay may be placed under “state of calamity”

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — Boracay may be placed under a “state of calamity” if the island’s pollution problem is not resolved soon.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said that the idea was floated by Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año.

Cimatu visited the island and was not happy with what he found.

Cimatu said that many structures and business establishments were found well within the 30-meter easement from the shoreline, where buildings and other structures are prohibited.

Other businesses and establishments were also constructed on forestland.
