DFA advises Filipinos vs traveling to protest areas in HK

(Eagle News)–The Department of Foreign Affairs has advised Filipinos against traveling to areas in Hong Kong where protesters gather.

In a statement, the DFA also encouraged them to monitor the pronouncements of the Hong Kong government and to heed the advice and instructions of local authorities.

“The public is encouraged as well to monitor developments and in doing so, to rely on legitimate media entities and news sources, and to be discerning with respect to information obtained through social media,” the DFA said.

According to the DFA, so far, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong “maintains  open communication lines with the Hong Kong government regarding the situation, and will provide the corresponding notification to the public, as necessary.”

Protesters have been taking to the streets to express opposition to a bill that, if passed into law, would allow for extraditions to China.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam has suspended the bill, but protesters have contended this did not suffice, noting it should be withdrawn in its entirety.

They have also asked for Lam’s resignation.
