Ban applies to relatives within the first and second degrees of consanguinity and affinity, body says
(Eagle News) — The Consultative Commission on Monday ruled that an incumbent government official’s relatives should be banned from succeeding him or her regardless of position.
The body tasked to look into the 1987 Constitution said that relatives within the first and second degrees of consanguinity and affinity could not assume said position of the incumbent from the barangay up to the presidential levels, with a vote of 17-1.
The Con-com said it would continue discussions on the matter on Tuesday.
The Con-com, composed of 25 members, was formed by President Rodrigo Duterte last year.
Once done, the body is slated to submit its recommended constitutional amendments to Congress, which will then approve or reject these.
Duterte has said that while a political dynasty was “bad,” it could do some good in some cases.
He cited the case in Davao, which he said was now a progressive city.
