CHED plans to revise regulations for fraternities

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) plans to change its regulatory requirements for college fraternities, following the death of another hazing victim, University of Sto. Tomas law student Horacio Tomas Castillo III.

During budget deliberations of the Senate Finance Subcommittee, CHED Chairperson Patricia Licuanan said they would provide proactive approaches to prevent violence in fraternity activities.

Licuanan said they would also study CHED Memorandum Order 4 in 1995, and see if it has enough teeth to punish those involved in the violent activities of fraternities.

She said they will consider revising it.

The said order only provides for a 60-day suspension for fraternity officials who would be proven guilty of committing any violent and offensive acts. (Eagle News Service)
