PHL COVID-19 case tally breaches 3-million mark with addition of 28,007 cases; 219 more deaths reported

DOH says 12 labs did not submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System

(Eagle News) — COVID-19 cases in the Philippines breached the three-million mark after the Department of Health reported 28,007 additional cases.

According to the DOH, all laboratories were operational on January 9 while 12 laboratories did not submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS).

The DOH said of the total cases, 181016 were active.

Of these, 5521 were asymptomatic, 170873 were mild, 2863 were moderate, 1464 were severe, and 295 were critical.

Recoveries rose to 2792946 with the addition of 4471 additional ones.

The COVID-19 death toll is now at 52511, with the addition of 219 deaths.

The DOH earlier said that the surge was still primarily driven by the Delta variant, even if local cases of the more transmissible Omicron variant have been detected in the Philippines.

The Philippines has detected over 40 Omicron variant cases.

On Monday, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III told President Rodrigo Duterte that Omicron was already the dominant COVID-19 variant in the Philippines.

On Tuesday, the Philippine Genome Center said, however, that it would examine more samples to verify if such was the case.
