CARTAGENA, Colombia (Reuters) – United States Vice President Mike Pence met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and his cabinet at the Presidential House in Cartagena upon his arrival to the South American country on Sunday (August 13).

Colombia is the first leg of Pence’s Latin American trip that will also include stops in Argentina, Chile and Panama.

Pence’s regional tour comes amid a sudden escalation of tensions between Washington and Caracas after President Donald Trump’s assertion that military intervention in the Venezuelan crisis was an option.

After months of attacking Venezuela’s  President Nicolas Maduro, Latin American countries have come out strongly against US threats of military action against the crisis-hit nation.

Peru, which led the charge in criticizing Trump’s threat, said it was against United Nations principles.

Mexico and Colombia joined in with statements of their own.
