Trillanes: Duterte’s request for measure lifting bank secrecy law in fraud cases “pure lip service”

(Eagle News)–Senator Antonio Trillanes IV labeled as “pure lip service” President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for a law lifting bank secrecy for fraud cases.

“Ni ayaw nga pumirma ng waiver nung nabisto s’ya na may mahigit P2 billion sa bangko,” Trillanes said in a statement.

Trillanes was referring to the time Duterte refused to sign a waiver following the senator’s allegations he had billions in his bank accounts.

But the President then vehemently denied the allegations made by Trillanes, saying it was the senator himself who had millions of cash in offshore accounts.

Trillanes also denied the allegations.

“Sige lang, in time, once you’re out of power, mailalabas na lahat yan at makikita na ng taongbayan kung gaano ka kakurakot,” Trillanes said.

In  asking for a general tax amnesty bill that contains a provision allowing bank secrecy laws to be lifted in fraud cases, Duterte said a bill without such could “create an environment ripe for future tax evasion” to the detriment of the government.
