This time around, Carpio won’t decline nomination to Chief Justice post

(Eagle News) — This time around, Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio will be vying for the Chief Justice position following Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo de Castro’s retirement on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Carpio had declined to be nominated following Maria Lourdes Sereno’s ouster as Chief Justice,  saying he had voted against her ouster via a quo warranto petition in the first place.

This time though, Carpio has said there was no reason for him to decline the automatic nomination to the post.

The automatic nomination is reserved for the most senior justices of the High Court, provided the justices accept the nomination.

Apart from Carpio, Supreme Court Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Mariano del Castillo and Estela Perlas-Bernabe are automatically nominated to the post

Peralta and Bersamin were shortlisted to the post following Sereno’s ouster in May.

The applications for the chief justice position will end on October 15.
