Tampa’s PhilFest highlights Filipino Beauty Pageant winners

TAMPA, FL (Eagle News) — The state of Florida showcased the best of Filipino culture, in its annual event called PhilFest.

Held at the Philippine Cultural Enrichment Complex in Tampa, entertainment and performances included the Philippine Choral Group and the Musikong Kawayan Bamboo Ensemble. The most anticipated part of the event, however, was the Philippine Beauty Pageant, otherwise known as Ms./Mrs. Philfest.

Hundreds of visitors came early to indulge in Filipino food and to watch the participants of this year’s Ms./Mrs. Philfest.

The pageant featured eight participants, each representing their own respected associations, like Ruby Olney who represented the Hernando County Philippine American Association, Inc. (HPAA).

All pageant participants competed for three consecutive days. The first day began with a presentation and introduction, the second day showcased the participants’ talents, and the third day was the announcement of the winners.

Third place was awarded to Ms. Angelica Alpapara; Second place awarded to Mrs. Emma Barrido; and first place was went to Mrs. Lorna Smith.

“I am proud to be a Filipino and I am proud of what we are doing here,” said Smith. “This is an extension of the Philippines and this is our new home and we want to show the Americans and other nations how amazing we are and we want to keep it on and preserve it for our future generations.”

Although not all contestants placed first, many were in good spirits about the event and showcasing Filipino culture.

Visitors left the three-day event quite pleased and entertained with the hopes of coming back next year.
