Sereno to Duterte: Why the closeness to China?

(Eagle News) — Former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on Wednesday, Nov. 21, hit President Rodrigo Duterte for the Philippines’ closeness to China, saying the Asian giant actually “opposes” and “crushes” the values which Filipinos uphold.

“We as a nation, especially our President, should not forget what is most important to Filipinos – love of God, freedom and dignity of every human being, preservation of the Philippines for Filipinos..Why the closeness to China and the repudiation of our international friends who share these values?” Sereno said in a statement.

“Don’t negate who we are as a people, Mr. President,” Sereno said.

Sereno was removed as Chief Justice by her colleagues in May, following her alleged failure to submit her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth when she was teaching at the University of the Philippines.

It was Solicitor General Jose Calida who filed the quo warranto petition the SC granted.
