Senate wants proposed amendment to Anti-Hazing Law passed before December

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Several senators are confident that the proposed amendments to the Anti-Hazing Law will be passed before December 2017.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said that the Senate will pursue the approval of the amendments especially because of the tragic death of University of Sto. Tomas law student Horacio Castillo III during the hazing activities of the Aegis Juris fraternity.

In an interview with GMA’s, Unang Balita, Zubiri said he and his co-author Senator Sherwin Gatchalian “are going to pursue this to the very end.

“Hindi po namin ititigil ang adbokasiya na ‘to at gusto po naming maipasa ang amended Anti-Hazing Law hopefully before December.”

Zubiri said that the Anti-Hazing Law had been already in effect for 20 years.  But despite this, many still fall victim to hazing.

“We have to stop this for our children’s future. We’ve got to make sure that we pass the new hazing law that will totally ban all forms of physical and mental violence,” Zubiri said.
