Senate leadership assures public: Constitution will still prevail

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — The Senate leadership assured the public that the Constitution will still prevail in the face of fears about martial law.

During his speech in the oath-taking ceremony of the Trustees and Officers of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce in Davao City on Saturday, Duterte said he does not want to stay in power, assuring the public on fears of a martial rule.

But his theoretical pronouncement analyzing why the fear of martial law came about and what its real purpose was, had been misreported in media, according to Malacañang.

Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said that it is clear in the provisions of the 1987 Constitution that the President can only declare martial law when there is an invasion or rebellion.

The declaration of martial law also involves multiple consultations with Congress and both the Congress and the Supreme Court can set aside the declaration if proven that there is no basis for such.
