Senate leaders file reso calling for recall of ban on “driver-only vehicles” on Edsa during rush hours

(Eagle News) — Senate leaders on Wednesday, Aug. 15, filed a resolution urging the Metro Manila Council to recall the “driver-only vehicles” ban on Edsa during rush hours.

In filing Resolution 845, Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senate Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto, and Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said 70 percent of those plying Edsa would be affected by the ban, which they said also violated due process laws in the Constitution.

They noted that no public consultation was held prior to the announcement of the ban in the first place.

“The implementation of (High-Occupancy Vehicle) lanes in other jurisdictions, including the US, Canada, and Indonesia, have been criticized as ineffective and counterproductive in addressing traffic congestion,” they added.

Also on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority held a dry-run of the ban, which it said would help decongest the major thoroughfare.
