SC Associate Justice De Castro turns down Ombudsman nomination

(Eagle News) — Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita de Castro has turned down her nomination for the Ombudsman post.

In a letter addressed to acting Chief Justice and Judicial and Bar Council acting chairman Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, De Castro said that while she was  “deeply moved and sincerely moved by, and thankful for, Justice Brion’s kind endorsement,” she had to decline as she “wish(es) to continue serving the Supreme Court until (she) reach(es) the compulsory retirement age.”

De Castro was referring to retired Associate Justice Arturo Brion, who cited her 45 years in government service in making the nomination.

De Castro instead wished the JBC well in its search for the replacement of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, who is slated to retire in July.

” I wish you the best in the discharge of your constitutionally ordained duties,” she said.
