JOJUTLA MUNICIPALITY, Mexico (CCTV) — Tuesday’s 7.1-magnitude quake left at least 17 dead in Mexico’s Jojutla Town, while knocked down 185 houses to debris, damaging 360 more and bringing down 60 walls.
Since the bridge connecting Jojutla to the outside world was equally damaged, carrying out rescue efforts posed a huge challenge and relief supplies were being transferred through a detour.
Jojutla, one of worst hit towns in Mexico, suffered power and internet outage too after the earthquake.
Currently, Mexico’s civil defense agency is calculating the property losses.
“What we are sure about is that 17 were killed. Aids from the government and civil defense department will arrive soon. We are still working on the calculation of affected houses. Many blocks in the town have been totally damaged, including shops and houses,” said a staff of Mexico’s Civil Defense Agency.
Even after 24 hours, residents of Jojutla Town are in a state of panic, while some have reached out to the others lending some help.
“Yesterday’s quake was really strong. I know many died. Our town is at the epicenter. We have got some relief goods and help here. People are helping each other out. We also need help and aid from the outside world. The Jojutla Town is one of the worst hit towns in Morelos,” said a local female resident.
The earthquake shook Mexico City and the surrounding states of Puebla, Mexico and Morelos on Tuesday killing 230 people.
The quake occurred not long after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake, the strongest since 1932, struck the southern part of the country on Sept 7, killing 98 people.
