(Eagle News) — The Supreme Court has a new associate justice.

Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo takes the place of Associate Justice Jose Catral Mendoza, who retired on Aug. 13, the Supreme Court said on Monday.

In a letter to SC Chief Ma. Lourdes Sereno, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said President Rodrigo Duterte had signed Gesmundo’s appointment, making him the 178th justice of the country’s High Court.

Gesmundo chaired the anti-graft court’s seventh division before his appointment.

He also co-chairs the Sandiganbayan’s committee on rules, and is the vice-chairperson of the Philippine Judicial Academy’s Department of Remedial Law.

He started out in government service as trial attorney at the Office of the Solicitor General in August 1985.

In 1998, he was recognized as Most Outstanding Solicitor.
