Palace to House: Consider possible amendments to draft federal Charter

(Eagle News)—The Palace on Friday, Dec. 14, called on the House of Representatives to be open to changes in its draft federal charter.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the appeal in a news conference, after former Chief Justice Reynato Puno, chair of the Consultative Committee tasked to review the 1987 Constitution, expressed his opposition to the draft, which proposes a removal of the term limits of lawmakers  and a lifting of the anti-political dynasty provision in the 1987 Charter.

“I hope (the House) should listen to former Chief Justice Reynato Puno and open themselves for amendmentst. They should reconsider,”  Panelo said.

According to Panelo, President Rodrigo Duterte himself has vowed to block a draft Charter that was anti-people.

“There might be the danger of people rejecting the proposed amendments to the Constitution, and then that would be a waste of people’s money,” he said.
