Palace expresses confidence SC will junk petition vs third extension of martial law in Mindanao

(Eagle News)–The Palace has expressed confidence the Supreme Court will junk the petition seeking to stop the third extension of martial law in Mindanao.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the grounds after all that were cited by the members of the opposition led by Rep. Edcel Lagman in questioning the third extension of martial law were “more or less similar with the grounds cited in their previous petition to nullify the second extension of martial law..”

The SC dismissed that petition.

“No new arguments have been presented while rebellion and the threat to public safety in Mindanao remain. Case law therefore dictates that the current petition merits dismissal as well,” he said.

In December, Congress approved President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for a third extension of martial law in Mindanao.

In a 46-page petition, Lagman’s group argued there was no rebellion in Mindanao that warranted the extension of martial law there as required by the Constitution.
